THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF
 WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONS

"I had only the deepest respect for Jersey Joe as a man and a champion," Gene Tunney once said. "He boxed well, cutely if not classically, and he had a strong punch in either hand. He was also cautious, but his caution did not prevent him from scoring knockdowns and knockouts. He had Joe Louis on the floor three times, and he knocked out Charles. If Joe had been accorded proper instruction and support earlier in his career, it might not have taken him so long to win the championship."
